Culture Dub Orchestra are a World Roots Dub band based in the Midlands, with influences from all parts of the globe.
With dub firmly at the core; CDO explores a range of cultures, religions, backgrounds and musical styles. A heavy roots drum and bass section (crucial to the true dub sound) is coloured by a variety of instruments and sounds. Guitar and keys deliver the essential reggae off-beat with a large palette of delays, while an array of live percussion from tabla to djembe bring it all together to take your mind on a spiritual nomadic journey. Although at the core CDO are an instrumental band they will often feature guest vocalists from varied musical backgrounds.
Members are all interconnected through previous musical projects which range through reggae, funk, soul, hip hop, ska, rock, salsa and Eastern folk- all contributing to the unique fusion of sounds.
Culture Dub Orchestra concentrates on using live instruments; working to create an organic sound influenced by anything from nature to ancient history.
CDO operate on a traditional recording process with all the members playing together live in the same room- delays, reverbs, leakage and bung notes all included. The recording is then mixed with minimal editing to keep the authentic feel and sound of the session.
CDO plan to develop the collective further by collaborating with musicians and vocalists from mixed backgrounds so as to keep the sound fresh and constantly evolving.
CDO also run there own sound system and collaborate with events of similar mind sets, currently working closely with Birminghams own Shanty Town Events.
Influences include: Santana, Augustus Pablo, Mad Professor, Mulatu Astatke, Inkuyo, Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, Paco pena, Shanghai Chinese Traditional Orchestra, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Hazel, Burning Spear, Jah Shaka, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Parliament Funkedelic, Prince, Thievery Corporation, Nujabes, Steel Pulse, Alice Coltrane, King Earthquake, Morgan Heritage, Aba Shanti I, Defacto, The Mars Volta, Massai Warrior, Dry and Heavy, Ojos de brujo and many more
